NATO Double-Track Decision

The federal government under Helmut Schmidt sees this as the strategic balance in Europe at risk. Schmidt calls 1977 the NATO on to counter-measures to balance the qualitative and quantitative superiority of the Soviet Union in the medium-range missiles. By adopting this objective, the foreign and defense ministers of NATO member states on 12 December 1979 in Brussels the NATO double-track decision.
The decision provides for negotiations with the Soviet Union over the elimination of intermediate-range missiles. The German Bundestag therefore shares on 22 November 1983 the votes of the CDU / CSU and FDP, the stationing of new U.S. medium-range missiles in the Federal Republic. Even during the two-day debate protesting supporters of the peace movement against the retrofit. A day after the resolution of the Bundestag broke the Soviet Union from the Geneva talks.
